A BEER brewed to mark Huddersfield Town’s centenary and the club’s hat-trick of Championship titles in the 1920s features at a two-day beer festival starting today. The Monkey Club, a licensed members’ club in Armitage Bridge, is hosting MonkeyFest from noon to 11pm today and from noon to 9pm tomorrow. A BEER has been brewed to honour Huddersfield Town in its centenary year – and its historic championship treble. Read

PUBS and brewing group Greene King today sounded an upbeat note – despite a near-3% fall in sales for the past two months.

The group, which includes Abbot Ale, IPA and Old Speckled Hen among its brews, said takings at its 753 managed pubs and 39 restaurants fell by 2.8% in May and June due to declining consumer confidence, the English smoking ban and raw material cost increases. Read

COMPUTER games retailer Game today said a strong market and a raft of hit new releases helped it beat expectations in the first half of the year.

The firm, which has a store at Kingsgate in Huddersfield, said it was “slightly ahead” of forecasts thanks to new titles, including Grand Theft Auto IV and Nintendo’s Wii Fit. Read

MARKET research firm Taylor Nelson Sofres today fended off a third attempt by advertising and media giant WPP to muscle in on its planned £1.5bn merger with German rival GfK.

TNS told WPP and its chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell to “stop interfering” after snubbing the latest approach, which values TNS at £1.08bn. Read

TRANSPORT technology group Invensys has won a £100m contract to help develop a high-speed rail link between Madrid and Valencia in Spain.

Work to be undertaken by the group’s rail division involves installing signalling and communications, including track circuits, train protection systems and the line’s traffic control centre as well as a three-year maintenance deal. Read

WATER regulator Ofwat confirmed today that it was fining Severn Trent Water a total of £35.8m for deliberately providing false information and poor customer service.

Ofwat proposed the fine – the biggest ever levied by the regulator – in April after ruling that customers had paid higher bills than necessary because of the failings. Read

BRITISH Airways today boosted its new trans-Atlantic operations today by announcing the takeover of a French airline for £54m.

The new acquisition is privately-owned L’Avion, which operates two Boeing 757 all-business class aircraft between Orly airport and Newark in New Jersey, USA. Read
